Hello, My name is Jeff Rose. My grandfather was on the USS West Virginia from 1934-1938. He was very proud of his days in the navy and very fond of his days aboard the West Virginia. His name was Clarence Goodwin Campbell. Born Dec. 15, 1913, died Sept. 8, 2001. He told many stories of the ship from the dry dock days in Bremerton where the fumes from painting got so strong to the days off long beach practicing
artillery. He especially recalled the day two opposing guns went off and buckled the deck. He also spoke highly of crossing the equator on the West Virginia and showed me the pictures of the crew and the certificate awarded at the time of crossing. It was somewhat of a hazing experience upon crossing the first time. He loved that ship. Thank you. Jeff Rose. |
