LaVerne B. Shea Sea.1c USN USS West Virginia 1938-1941 |
LaVerne Shea was on the West Virginia when it was bombed at Pearl Harbor. He swam ashore and regrouped with other survivors and the little group then went onto the Mudford (a garbage scow) and proceeded to return to the side of the West Virginia and fought the fire. When exploding munitions caught the Mudford on fire, LaVerne again swam ashore, through the flaming oil-covered water. This time few of his companions made it safely to shore. He served in the navy for the duration of the war. |
