Your Uncle 'Lenny’ Lemire was quite a man. He sent almost all of his pay home to his mother to take care of the family. Thus on that fateful Sunday morning he was not ashore as those survivors with liberty were. He was standing on the USS West Virginia’s rear deck when one of the very first torpedoes to strike any battle ship hit, waiting for the officer to take them to Chapel services on the forward deck under the white tarp. Colors had just finished, by bugler survivor Richard Fisk (USMC). The first torpedo struck pretty much where the Chapel detail was standing. His body was recovered and he is now at the Punchbowl in Oahu Hawaii. He was one of the very first killed in Pearl Harbor and WWII for that matter, and has a Highway and VFW named in his honor in Ma.
